The project will upgrade sections of the Great Northern Highway totalling approximately 101.5 kilometres between Muchea and Wubin, including realignment; intersection upgrades; widening; and construction of rest areas and additional overtaking lanes.
The upgrade will improve freight productivity (i.e. eventual introduction of road trains further south to Muchea), reduce travel times and improve safety on a national network highway that is a key link for the transport of equipment and supplies to the resources industry in the north of Western Australia.
The Australian Government is contributing $275.8 million towards the $344.8 million project.
Work on the next section, the Miling Straight Realignment, commenced in November 2016 and is expected to be completed in September 2017. Construction on the Miling Bypass, Muchea North and Pithara Sections is expected to commence in mid 2017. The full project is expected to be completed in 2019.
