The project involves approximately six kilometres of the Plenty Highway from gravel to a two-lane seal, with associated drainage works as required.
The project is expected to deliver the following benefits:
- improve overall road safety and riding quality
- improve flood immunity
- minimise vehicle weight and type restrictions due to flooding or pavement preservation needs
- support current and future demand from mining, cattle and tourism industries
- reduce closure times of the highway
- formalise access roads
The Australian Government will provide 80% of the project costs capped up to a contribution of $5 million, subject to the Northern Territory providing 20% of the project costs.
Construction is expected to commence in early 2019, and be completed in late 2019, weather permitting.
