Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program

The Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP) is an ongoing Australian Government initiative, with up to $65 million per year provided to fund infrastructure projects that improve the productivity and safety outcomes of heavy vehicle operations across Australia.

Applications are accepted all year round to provide increased flexibility and permit projects to be submitted when they will most benefit Australia’s heavy vehicle infrastructure.

Applications are continually assessed with recommended projects batched on a regular basis for approval by the Minister. Timing of each tranche is subject to change and is dependent on demand, however we expect tranches to close around the end of February, May, August and November each year.

Applications for HVSPP funding are invited from state, territory and local governments. Please refer to the Program Resource web page for information on how to apply or administer your existing project.

Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas

In the October Budget the Australian Government committed an additional $80 million to support new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas. This funding brings the Government’s total commitment in dedicated funding for heavy vehicle rest areas to $140 million over 10 years. This funding will be delivered as the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area initiative (HVRA) through the HVSPP.

It is expected that applications seeking funding as part of the heavy vehicle rest area initiative through the HVSPP will be invited in the first half of 2023.

In the meantime, applications for new or upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas can continue to be submitted through the HVSPP.

Expression of Interest – Long-Distance Truck Drivers

A Steering Committee is being established to ensure that drivers have a voice in the design of the HVRA.

Expressions of Interest for the Steering Committee have now closed.

Previous Funding Rounds

This program previously accepted applications through time-limited funding rounds. Since the program commenced in 2009 seven funding rounds have been undertaken.
