Black Spot Program
About the program
As part of the Local and State Government Road Safety Package announced in the 2019-20 Budget, the Australian Government has committed an additional $50 million per year from 2019-20 to the Black Spot Program. The Government will provide $1.0 billion to the Black Spot Program from the 2013-2014 financial year to the 2022-2023 financial year, with an on-going commitment of $110 million each year following. Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. Black Spot projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring. By funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes. Programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.
The Black Spot Program makes an important contribution in reducing the national road toll under the National Road Safety Action Plan 2018–2020.
