Project description
The Tennant Creek to Townsville corridor is a key economic freight route that supports major industries including mining, agriculture and tourism.
The Tennant Creek to Townsville Corridor Upgrade is delivering targeted upgrades to the Flinders and Barkly highways and surrounding roads. These National Network links form part of the critical Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Zone, a supply chain linking the mineral and agricultural production areas in north west Queensland with the Port of Townsville.
This Project will deliver approximately 9.3km of pavement strengthening and widening on a priority section of the Flinders Highway between Julia Creek and Cloncurry.
Benefits
The Project is expected to improve safety, ride quality, and pavement performance and well as decrease travel time and vehicle operating cost savings.
Funding
The Australian Government has committed $34.12 million towards the Project, in partnership with the Queensland Government.
Timetable
The Project commenced construction in mid 2022, and is expected to be completed by early 2024, weather permitting.
