Project description
The Tennant Creek to Townsville corridor is a key economic freight route that support major industries including mining, agriculture and tourism.
The Tennant Creek to Townsville Corridor Upgrade is delivering targeted upgrades to the Flinders and Barkly highways and surround roads. These National Network links form part of the critical Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Zone, a supply chain linking the mineral and agricultural production area in north west Queensland with the Port of Townsville.
This Project will deliver two new overtaking lanes approximately 30 kilometres south west of Townsville, and one new overtaking lane approximately 70 kilometres south west of Townsville.
Benefits
The Project is expected to improve safety, reliability of the road network, economic opportunities and tourism, as well as improved freight efficiency.
Funding
The Australian Government has committed $18.38 million towards the Project, in partnership with the Queensland Government.
Timetable
The Project is expected to commence in mid 2022 and be completed in mid 2023, weather permitting.
