This Port Rail Shuttle project is a proposal to develop or upgrade rail connections and metropolitan intermodal terminals in key industrial areas in Melbourne. These intermodal terminals include Altona, Dandenong South and Somerton.
This project will improve the efficiency of containerised freight movements in the metropolitan area.
The Australian Government has committed $38 million, with the Victorian Government committing $20 million to the project. The private sector is also contributing $82 million to the project.
Construction on the new rail connections is expected to begin in mid 2021 and is expected to be completed in mid 2022.
