Project Description

The project will complete the upgrade of the M80 Ring Road. It will widen and upgrade the remaining four sections between:

  • Sunshine Avenue and the Calder Freeway
  • Princes Freeway and Western Highway
  • Sydney Road and Edgars Road
  • Plenty Road and Greensborough Highway

The project is expected to reduce congestion by increasing capacity. The project is also expected to reduce travel times and improve safety. The completion of the full upgrade will enable these benefits to be realised across the entire corridor.

The estimated cost of the project is $1 billion. The Australian Government is contributing $500 million and the Victorian Government $500 million.

Construction on the Sunshine Avenue to Calder Freeway section commenced on 2 October 2016 and reached practical completion in October 2018 (minor works will be completed in 2019).

Construction on the Sydney Road to Edgars Road section commenced on 28 October 2019 and is expected to be completed late 2022.

The two remaining sections are currently in planning.
