The project will upgrade the Great Alpine Road from Wangaratta to Cobungra, including shoulder sealing and intersection improvements at priority locations; pedestrian crossing points in Bright; the installation of safety barriers around high risk curves and drop-offs; improving chain bays and pull-over areas; kerb and channel work; and signage and other messaging to advise road users of road closures.
The project is expected to improve safety and efficiency for all road users and support the the economic growth in the Alpine region.
The estimated cost of the project is $8 million. The Australian and Victorian governments are each contributing $4 million.
Construction commenced on 6 March 2018 and is expected to be completed early 2019.
