The project involves the upgrade of 2.6 kilometres of the Bruce Highway between Kate Street and Aumuller Street, with a six-lane to four-lane transition to Fearnley Street, and the upgrade of Bruce Highway (Comport Street), Port Connection Road (Draper Street) and Draper Street/Kenny Street intersections, including approaches.
The project will deliver long-term improvements to traffic flow, freight delivery and road safety south of Cairns, through reducing urban congestion, reducing highway travel time and improving road access.
The Australian Government has committed up to $83.3 million towards the project in partnership with the Queensland Government.
Construction works commenced in mid 2018 and the project is expected be completed in mid 2021, weather permitting.
