Project Description

The project involves upgrading approximately 7.5km of the Plenty Highway from gravel to a two-lane seal, with associated drainage works as required.


The project is expected to deliver the following benefits:

  • improve overall road safety and riding quality
  • improve flood immunity
  • minimise vehicle weight and type restrictions due to flooding or pavement preservation needs
  • support current and future demand from mining, cattle and tourism industries
  • reduce closure times of the highway
  • formalise access roads


The Australian Government will provide 80% of the project costs capped up to a contribution of $5 million, subject to the Northern Territory Government providing 20% of the project costs.


Construction commenced in April 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2021, weather permitting.
