The project involves upgrading approximately 7.5km of the Plenty Highway from gravel to a two-lane seal, with associated drainage works as required.
The project is expected to deliver the following benefits:
- improve overall road safety and riding quality
- improve flood immunity
- minimise vehicle weight and type restrictions due to flooding or pavement preservation needs
- support current and future demand from mining, cattle and tourism industries
- reduce closure times of the highway
- formalise access roads
The Australian Government will provide 80% of the project costs capped up to a contribution of $5 million, subject to the Northern Territory Government providing 20% of the project costs.
Construction commenced in April 2019 and completed in October 2021.
