Waiben Esplanade, Thursday Island - 127022-23QLD-RTR
Waiben Esplanade is the access road to the only boat ramp on Thursday Island. The road reserve is only partially sealed with the remainder being unsealed. As fishing, hunting and ocean access is a significant element of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, the boat ramp is heavily utilised at all times. Vehicles and trailers currently park on unsealed parts of Waiben Reserve Road resulting in dust problems to nearby houses in the dry season and vehicles getting stuck during the wet season. Regular maintenance and expense is experienced by Council in ongoing grading and wetting the road.It is proposed to increase the width of the seal of the road on one side by a further 5 metres to accommodate the parked vehicles and trailers to address the daily issues at the boat ramp. Due to the cost of works, the project will be issued to market via tender to ensure best value for money
