Project description

The Australian Government has approved up to $75 million for the Australian Rail Track Corporation to upgrade the remainder of track on the Port Botany Rail Line, including replacement of remaining timber sleepers, ballast and installation of heavier weight rail.

The Stage 3 upgrade project also includes: scoping phase investigations into capacity enhancements to the Southern Sydney Freight Line/Metropolitan Freight Network, which will support the Moorebank intermodal terminal precinct, and other cross-metropolitan freight shuttle services; and the Cabramatta Loop development phase which includes construction design and geotechnical investigations.

Benefits

The project will alleviate constraints in the transport of freight to and from Port Botany, improve the efficiency of freight transport on the Port Botany Rail Line and plan for future capacity enhancements across the Sydney Metropolitan Freight Network.

Funding

The Australian Government approved funding of up to $75 million in August 2015 for the Stage 3 track upgrade of the Port Botany Rail Line.  This includes initial project funding for the scoping phase (capacity enhancement study) and the development phase of the track upgrade granted in November 2014.

Timetable

Planning and development work for the project commenced in November 2014 and construction began in 2015-16.  Project completion is scheduled to occur before the end of 2019-20.
