The Australian and New South Wales governments are investing $4.4 billion in the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan (WSIP), with the Australian Government providing over $3.5 billion.

The WSIP will provide better road linkages within the Western Sydney region and benefit the region's growing population. This investment will relieve pressure on existing infrastructure and unlock the economic capacity of the region by easing congestion and reducing travel times. The plan will deliver a quality surface transport network, ensuring the efficient movement of passengers, employees and freight, when Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport opens in 2026.

The WSIP is expected to support 4,000 direct and indirect jobs over the life of the plan.

Projects

The WSIP comprises the following projects:

  • The Northern Road
The Australian Government contributed $1.2 billion toward the $1.6 billion project, to upgrade approximately 35 kilometres of The Northern Road to a minimum of four lanes between The Old Northern Road, Narellan and Jamison Road, South Penrith. The project was delivered in six stages. The final stage opened to traffic in late 2021.
  • Bringelly Road
The Australian Government contributed $407 million toward the $509 million upgrade of Bringelly Road. The project involved the upgrade of approximately 10 kilometres of Bringelly Road between Camden Valley Way and The Northern Road. The project was delivered in two stages. Stage 1 opened to traffic in December 2018 and Stage 2 opened to traffic in December 2020.
  • M12 Motorway
The Australian Government has committed $1.63 billion towards the delivery of the $2.04 billion M12 Motorway. The project will provide an east-west link between the M7 Motorway and The Northern Road, while also providing a connection to the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. The project is under construction and is expected to be completed prior to the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport opening in 2026.
  • Werrington Arterial Road
The Australian Government contributed 50 per cent of the cost of the $52 million Werrington Arterial Road upgrade. Works included road widening, new entry and exit ramps and intersection upgrades. Construction commenced in March 2015 and was the first major WSIP project to be completed, opening to traffic in May 2017.
  • Glenbrook Intersection at Ross Street
The Australian Government contributed $2.5 million toward the $5.6 million project, which upgraded the Great Western Highway and Ross Street intersection at Glenbrook, providing safe access and a gateway to Glenbrook Village. The project was completed in November 2018.
  • Local Roads Package
The Australian Government is fully funding the $200 million Local Roads Package (LRP). The LRP is a competitive rounds-based program, which is enabling 7 Western Sydney councils to complete minor road improvement works in the Western Sydney area.
  • All Round 1 and Round 2 projects are complete. In Round 3, six projects are underway and six projects have been completed. Round 4 projects are expected to commence by mid 2023.
