Project description
The project will upgrade and seal sections of the access roads on the Tiwi Islands, including the Paru Road.
Benefits
By improving roads on the islands, this project will:
- support economic growth opportunities, particularly those associated with the potential export of plantation timber;
- create local employment opportunities; and
- provide all-weather access to Tiwi College on Melville Island.
Funding
The Australian Government committed $60 million toward this $75 million project in partnership with the Northern Territory Government.
Timetable
Scoping and investigation activities started in January 2021. Construction is anticipated to commence in early 2023 and be completed by mid 2027.
