About the Active Transport Fund (ATF)

The ATF Program provides funding for the upgrade of existing, and construction of new, bicycle and walking pathways across Australia.
The program has 3 objectives:

  • road safety
  • reducing transport emissions
  • active and liveable communities.

It is an ongoing, application-based, merit-assessed, funding program, open to all state and territory governments and Local Government Authorities (LGAs).

How to apply

Information on project eligibility can be found in the Program Guidelines below.

Tranche 2 of the ATF will open from 1 August 2026 until 5:00pm (AEST) 30 September 2026.

Applications must be submitted via the Reporting and Program Management (RPM) portal. The latest application form must be used and can be accessed below, or through RPM.

Webinar for potential applicants

The department is hosting a webinar about the ATF on 10 August 2026 for state and territory governments and LGAs. The webinar will outline information about the program, eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Invitations to register will be sent to state and territory governments and LGAs, ahead of the date.

Resources for the management of projects

The Request for Tender Exemption Form is to seek an exemption from tendering works greater than $100,000. The form also explains when exemptions may not be required.
The Project Variation Request Form must be used to request a change in scope, cost and/or schedule of an approved project.
The Milestone Claim Form is used to claim a milestone payment. The completed form, along with supporting evidence must be sent to the relevant state/territory government or the department directly, depending on the jurisdiction.
The Quarterly Reporting Form is used by all proponents to report on projects. Details of what information is required is found within the form.
The Post Completion Report provides a summary of key features of the project and how it met the objectives of the program. It must be submitted with the milestone claim form to claim the final milestone payment. The department will review this evidence and the final milestone will be paid upon acceptance of this evidence. An expenditure or transaction report may also be required, the department will provide guidance on this if needed.
The Project Withdrawal Request form must be used to request the withdrawal/cancellation of an approved project.
