Gorrie Dry River Road, Katherine - 130787-24NT-RTR
Gorrie Dry River Road runs through the Sturt Plateau region and has several pastoral leases along the route. This region also produces hay and other growing products. The number of heavy vehicles has significantly increased over time due to increase in production on Sturt Plateau region. The unsealed road section with the jump up on Gorrie Dry River Road is a steep gradient (8% to 10% grade). Road trains have the potential to lose traction on the gravel surface and become stuck causing road block to other vehicles. Road train is required to break up each trailer resulting in trailer haulage on the jump up section that become hazardous to other road users. There are also several tight curves at the bottom of the jump up that restrict road trains to gain reasonable speed to avoid becoming stuck halfway up the jump up and trailers have potential to go over the edges. Sealing the jump up section will provide better access to heavy vehicles and eliminating road safety risk for motorists. The proposed work is to seal the jump up section from 182.5 to 182.9 kilometres.
