Project description

The Australian and Queensland governments jointly funded the $355 million Pacific Motorway Upgrade, Springwood South to Daisy Hill project.

As part of this upgrade the project:

Rehabilitated the motorway, providing for future lane upgrades to preserve and maintain the road network for the next 20 years;
Included heavy-duty ashphalting, construction of wider road shoulders, safety barriers and installation of improved signage;
Replaced the Loganlea Road bridge with a new five-lane overpass with provision for cyclists and pedestrians;
Upgraded the Loganlea Road Interchange with signalised intersections; and
Improved the Paradise Road roundabout.

Benefits

The Pacific Motorway Upgrade, Springwood South to Daisy Hill project improved access, traffic flow and safety. The project delivered:

Greater safety along the motorway, with more evenly spaced, longer on and off ramps, reducing the potential for traffic weaving and queuing on the motorway;
More reliable traffic flows on the motoway with provision for future lane upgrades;
An improved motorway road surface, maintained and preserved for the next 20 years;
Safer and more efficient travel between the motorway and local roads with traffic signals replacing the Loganlea Road roundabouts;
Greater road capacity to travel across the motorway with the new five-lane Loganlea Road overpass that also provides for cyclists and pedestrians;
Improved traffic flow at the Paradise Road roundabout, by reducing the number of entry points to the roundabout;
Greater accessibility to public transport both to and from Logan city with a new bus stop and park 'n' ride facilities; and
Improved safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists with dedicated off-road cycle/pedestrian facilities.

Funding

The Australian and Queensland governments each provided $455 million, a total of $910 million towards upgrading the Pacific Motorway between the Gateway Motorway and Tugun. Of this $910 million, this project was allocated $355 million. The Australian Government provided $177.5 million to the project, in partnership with the Queensland Government.

Timetable

Construction commenced in November 2009 and was completed in November 2012.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
