Project description

The project upgraded and improved safety at selected locations on the Western Highway between Stawell and the South Australian border. The project constructed new overtaking lanes and rest areas, upgraded and strengthened existing bridges and sealed local access roads and shoulders. The project also determined the future alignment for a bypass around Horsham and installed an Intelligent Transport System (ITS).

Benefits

The project increased freight efficiency, reduced transit times and improved traffic flow and safety for the 2,500 to 4,000 vehicles that are estimated to use the Western Highway between Stawell and the SA border each day.

Installation of the ITS, which advises drivers of current or upcoming traffic conditions in the event of an emergency or accident, has enabled drivers to make informed decisions about their intended route and reduced the need for lengthy delays or detours.

Funding

The estimated cost of the project was $48.95 million. The Australian Government contributed $40.40 million and the Victorian Government $8.55 million.

Timetable

Construction commenced 4 January 2010 and was completed on 30 April 2016.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
