Project description

The Australian Government provided $77 million under the Community, Beef and Mining Roads Improvement Programme in partnership with the Northern Territory Government which contributed $34.5 million to remote communities for better roads. This funding improved outcomes in road standards for a range of road projects in rural areas of the Northern Territory.

The Central Arnhem Road project which formed part of the Community, Beef and Mining Roads Improvement Package provided construction of a section of road realignment, strengthened and widened pavement at approaches to new submersible single lane bridges and associated floodways at the Mainoru River Crossings, Goyder River and Badalngarrmirri (Donydji) River Crossings.

Benefits

The benefits from this project include:

a reduction in the frequency and length of the periodic road closures which isolate indigenous communities;
improved safety for all users of the road
a reduction in transport operation costs

Funding

The Australian Government provided $40 million to the Central Arnhem Road project in partnership with the Northern Territory Government.

Timetable

Construction commenced on the first of the works in December 2010. The full programme was completed in December 2014.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
