Project description

The National Smart Managed Motorways - M4 (Western Motorway) project undertook works to develop a concept design for the future implementation of a managed motorways system on the M4 between Concord Road, Strathfield and Lapstone.

Benefits

The project included a review of traffic management systems and procedures to ensure compatibility with a managed motorways system. The project also ensured the concept design would meet environmental requirements whilst maximising environmental benefits.

The broader managed motorways project, when constructed, will improve safety, reliability and efficiency by:

  • providing higher through-put, more reliable travel speed and enhanced productive capacity particularly during peak periods;
  • supporting efficient and reliable travel on priority freight routes;
  • maximising the performance of the M4 to ensure that industry and commerce are not adversely affected by avoidable transport costs;
  • enabling enhanced mobility to be maintained on the M4 whilst managing growth in travel demand; and
  • enhancing the productivity of transport and thus competitiveness of industry at a lower environmental cost.

Funding

The Australian Government provided $8.5 million towards this $17 million project.

Timetable

This project was completed in December 2015.
