Project description

The Tasmanian Freight Rail Revitalisation - Network project incorporated sleeper and rail replacement, formation rectification, yard and terminal track work and the addition of, or modification to existing, passing loops, level crossing upgrades, rail corridor drainage upgrades and works to assets that may create a single point of failure to the network such as bridges and major culverts.

Benefits

The project reduced the operational costs of freight movements by providing additional rail capacity, improved reliability and reduced transit times. The works also helped to reduce derailments.

Funding

The Australian Government contribution is capped at 50% of total project costs. The Australian Government contributed a maximum of $39.3 million to Tranche 1. The Tasmanian Government has committed matched funding of $39.3 million towards this project. The Australian Government is contributing $50.0 million to Tranche 2. The Tasmanian Government has committed matched funding of $50.0 million towards this project. This forms part of the overall Tasmanian Freight Rail Revitalisation Program.

Timetable

Works commenced on the project in September 2015 and Tranche 1 was completed in June 2019. For Tranche 2, the project construction commenced in July 2020 was completed in June 2023.
