Project description

The project involved the upgrade of approximately 12km and the sealing of approximately 3km of the Buntine Highway.

Benefits

The project aimed to improve flood immunity, safety and reliability, increase the efficiency of freight movements, and improve freight corridor productivity along this section of the Buntine Highway.

Funding

The Australian Government provided over $8.7 million towards this project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in mid-2015 and works completed in June 2017.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
