Project description

Adelaide's North-South Corridor runs between Gawler in the north and Old Noarlunga in the south. The Corridor facilitates freight movements to and from Adelaide Airport, the Port of Adelaide and surrounding industrial areas, and is a critical route for the movement of vehicles through Adelaide.

The Corridor has been progressively upgraded in stages since 2008. Upon its completion in 2031, the Corridor will comprise a free-flowing 78 kilometre non-stop motorway.

Benefits

An upgraded North-South Corridor will improve freight transport productivity in Adelaide. The corridor is a critical route for the movement of freight and business-related passenger traffic, connecting the Port of Adelaide, Adelaide Airport, the Islington intermodal terminal and other freight terminals. Improvements to the corridor will contribute to enhanced productivity and increased competitiveness for export industries.

Funding

Since 2008, the Australian Government has committed more than $7.5 billion towards projects along the North-South Corridor, including:

$438.4 million towards the Northern Expressway (2008-2010);

$395.5 million towards the South Road Superway (2010-2013);

$383.5 million towards the North-South Corridor - Torrens Road to River Torrens (2015-2018);

$571.6 million towards the North-South Corridor - Darlington Upgrade (2016-2020);

$685.6 million towards the Northern Connector (2016-2020);

$147 million towards the North-South Corridor - Regency Road to Pym Street (2019-2021); and

$4.975 billion towards the North-South Corridor - Torrens to Darlington (2025-2031).

Timetable

Construction of the North-South Corridor commenced in 2008 and, with the completion of the final North-South Corridor - Torrens to Darlington project, is expected to be completed in 2031.
