Project description
Local Roads Package
The Australian Government, in partnership with the New South Wales (NSW) Government, has announced a ten-year road investment programme of over $3.6 billion for western Sydney. This programme includes a $200 million funding package for upgrades to locally important roads, and is part of the Australian Government’s plan to build the infrastructure of the 21st century and grow the NSW economy.
The Local Roads Package will enable the Australian Government to fund a range of works that will improve local transport connections and support the communities of western Sydney around the airport. This package will fund a range of road upgrades which would have the greatest benefits for local communities by increasing safety and improving traffic flows.
Cumberland Highway Intersection Upgrades
The project includes:
- installation of right turn bays on John Street, St Johns Road and Hamilton Road at their intersections with the Cumberland Highway;
- increasing the capacity of the right turn bays on the Cumberland Highway at its intersections with John Street, St Johns Road and Hamilton Road;
- increase the length of short through lanes on the Cumberland Highway;
- relocate affected services as necessary;
- traffic control signals designs and approval; and
- civil and pavement works associated with kerb realignments.
Benefits
The project will achieve the following objectives:
- reductions in queuing distances at intersections;
- increased performance for local roads and the Cumberland Highway;
- improved and more consistent travel times; and
- capability for the intersections to accommodate the growth in Sydney’s south-western suburbs which will be impacted by the future Western Sydney Airport and employment areas.
Funding
The Australian Government is fully funding this $5.8 million project.
