Project description
This project is Section 1 of the overall CityLink Tulla Widening Project. Section 1 involved the widening and upgrading of the Tullamarine Freeway between the Melbourne Airport and Melrose Drive. Specifically, Section 1 has:
- provided an additional lane in each direction between the airport and Melrose Drive;
- provided a grade separated south bound lane between Mickleham Road and the M80 Ring Road to address traffic flow issues caused by weaving movements;
- implemented a managed motorways system including ramp metering and lane use management; and
- provided ramp metering including priority queue bypass for buses on the inbound ramp from the Airport.
Benefits
The project will reduce travel times and improve safety. The overall CityLink Tulla Widening Project will reduce congestion by increasing capacity on the corridor by up to 30 per cent.
Funding
The Australian Government contributed $182.7 million towards this $228.4 million project.
Timetable
Construction commenced on 28 May 2016 and all lanes were open, ahead of schedule, on 21 September 2018.
