Project description

The project has duplicated 3.2 kilometres of single carriageway and installed safety fencing and barriers on the Bass Highway between Westbury and Exton. The project also lengthened existing access ramps and installed audible line marking, safety barriers and lighting on Illawarra Main Road. Edge line delineation was also upgraded at six locations on the National Network.

Additional road safety upgrades to the Bass Highway at Latrobe have also been completed, including signage and pedestrian accessibility to the Moriarty Road roundabout, Bass Highway; improvement to driver visibility and sight lines by regrading and raising the road at the Gilbert Street (Mersey Main Road) junction with the Bass Highway; and channelised right turn facility on the Bass Highway into York Street junction and channelised right turn facility on the Bass Highway into the Wattle Hill Service station’s northern access.

Benefits

The project will reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes, reduce the severity of run off road crashes and provide a consistent road environment. The project will also improve capacity and reliability for transport operations. The project will aim to achieve a minimum 3 star AusRAP safety rating.

Funding

The Australian Government has contributed $7.2 million and the Tasmanian Government $1.8 million to this project.

Timetable

Construction commenced on 15 October 2015 and was completed on 29 July 2016 for road upgrades to on the Bass Highway between Westbury and Exton and Illawarra Main Road. Construction commenced on March 2018 and was completed on August 2018 for the Latrobe road safety upgrades.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
