Project description

The Project includes upgrade of the Northern Road Intersections at Great Western Highway and Derby Street and Bringelly Road/Caddens Road intersection.

The scope of the work includes:

Increasing right turn capacity on Great Western Highway, westbound at The Northern Road
Increasing right turn capacity on The Northern Road, north bound at Great Western Highway
Median adjustment and lane widening on the Northern Road southbound at Great Western Highway
Widening Derby Street approaches to The Northern Road to enable dedicated right turn lanes
A new roundabout at the intersection of Bringelly Road and Caddens Road
Minor land acquisition
Removal of parking and/or peak hour parking restrictions on The Northern Road and on Derby Street approaches

Benefits

The benefits will:

Enhance the regional road link between the new Airport and Regional Centre of Penrith
Improve traffic flow
Reduce or eliminate the number of crashes
Improve the efficiency of signalised intersection by increasing right turn capacity and extending intersection approaches
Increased opportunities for local business with improved transport access to and from the shopping precincts

Funding

Australian Government contribution is providing up to $7.5 million.

Timetable

Construction commenced mid 2018 and opened to traffic mid 2020.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
