Project description

The project will complete  planning and preservation of the corridor, including the development of a business case, to enable the future construction of a new 8.3 kilometre rail freight line from the southern outskirts of Townsville directly connecting the North Coast Rail Line to the Port of Townsville.

Benefits

The Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor project will provide benefits for rail freight transporting materials from the Mount Isa and North Coast line into the Port of Townsville. It will create capacity for the growing tonnage demand on the Mount Isa rail system and improve traffic flow, amenity and safety in the city centre by reducing the number of freight trains using the current line.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $6.25 million and the Queensland Government $6.25 million.

Timetable

Planning commenced in July 2016 and was completed in September 2021. Work is continuing to reserve the corridor including land resumptions that are expected to be finalised by mid 2028.
