Project description
The project will upgrade the capacity and accessibility of the major supply route between Gracemere and the Rockhampton abattoirs, providing a high level of benefits to the northern Queensland beef industry.
Approximately 29km of the cattle haulage route will be upgraded to provide access for Type 1 Road Trains. The roads to be upgraded include the Capricorn Highway, Bruce Highway, the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Road and the Rockhampton-Emu Park Road.
Benefits
The project will deliver the following improvements to the cattle supply chain:
- Remove the requirement for road trains travelling between Gracemere saleyards and the Rockhampton abattoirs to breakdown prior to entering Rockhampton from the Capricorn Highway
- Improved road safety by widening pavement widths to appropriate standards
- Improved reliability and efficiency of cattle movements from Central Queensland to the Rockhampton abattoirs (including reduced need for cross loading)
Funding
The Australian Government has committed up to $20 million towards this $30 million project.
Timetable
Construction commenced in November 2019 and completed in early 2021.
