Project description

The Flinders Highway is a high-productivity freight route, which forms part of the National Land Transport Network, linking agricultural and mining activities to the processing and export facilities in Townsville.

The scope of works for this project includes undertaking approximately 8km of pavement strengthening and rehabilitation works, in order to remedy failing and deteriorating pavements, and to improve access condition, safety and asset resilience on the section of the Highway between Townsville and Torrens Creek.

This project is one of two packages of work being funded under the Northern Australia Roads Program on the Flinders Highway.

Benefits

The project will support growing traffic volumes on the Highway from a diverse range of road users including mining, agricultural, tourists and local communities.

Further, this project will provide the following benefits to all road users:

  • improved road asset safety, efficiency and reliability for Townsville – Mount Isa
  • improved pavement strength to cater for higher mass loads
  • improved safety through improved pavement conditions
  • improved ride quality for road users
  • reduced whole-of-life asset maintenance costs

Funding

The Australian Government has committed up to $14.89 million towards this $18.61 million project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in June 2018 and was completed in May 2019.
