Project description
The Diamantina Developmental Road is a north-south road linking Mount Isa to Charlesville. The Boulia to Dajarra section is mostly sealed to a narrow 3.8 metre standard, and services a number of abattoirs and cattle grazing areas in northern Queensland.
The project involves widening and rehabilitation of over 12km of road from a narrow single-lane seal to a six-metre wide seal to improve productivity, resilience and safety on the Boulia to Dajarra section.
Benefits
The project will deliver the following improvements to the cattle supply chain:
- improved road safety by widening the pavement seal to allow for two-way traffic
- reduced damage and stress to livestock by widening the pavement seal to remove the need for cattle trucks to leave the sealed pavement at high speed when approaching oncoming vehicles
- improved travel time and reliability by providing two-way sealed road conditions
- reduced whole-of-life asset management costs by strengthening and widening pavements to reduce accelerated road wear and damage by heavy vehicles
Funding
The Australian Government has committed up to $4.03 million towards this $5.03 million project.
Timetable
Construction commenced in March 2019 and was completed in May 2019.
