Project description

The Landsborough Highway is part of the National Land Transport Network between Brisbane and Darwin and is the principal north-south route serving western Queensland.

The project involves upgrading approximately 25km of the Landsborough Highway between Longreach and Winton, to improve the narrow and deteriorating pavement and drainage structures and, increase safety and asset resilience.

Sections of the road with rough and narrow pavement will be prioritised under these works on the Landsborough Highway between Dingo Creek and Darr River.

Benefits

The project will address deficiencies on priority sections of the Highway which include ageing pavements, deficient seal and formation, low flood immunity and insufficient safety treatments.

The project will provide the following benefits:

  • improved road safety by widening pavement width to current standards (9-metre width) for a national highway
  • improved route reliability, by increasing flood immunity at Dingo Creek and other low-level crossings
  • improved reliability and efficiency of freight movements between Brisbane and Darwin, through beef and sheep grazing areas and the Galilee Basin coal and energy province
  • reduced whole-of-life asset management costs by strengthening and widening pavements to reduce accelerated road wear and damage by heavy vehicles

Funding

The Australian Government committed $19.99 million towards the $24.99 million project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in March 2019 and was completed in April 2020.
