Project description

The Bajool - Port Alma Road forms part of the Queensland Key Freight Route Network, supporting developments in the Bowen and Galilee Basins. The Road is a HAZMAT Class 1 explosive freight and ammonium nitrate route, with the Port the highest volume licensed explosives port in Australia.

The project will upgrade sections of the Bajool – Port Alma Road, to the south east of Rockhampton by undertaking widening and safety works on the existing road.

Benefits

The upgrade aims to improve productivity and safety along this key freight route, where heavy vehicles carry volatile and hazardous loads (class 1 explosives, ammonium nitrate and liquid fuel) to and from the Port.

The project will provide the following benefits:

  • improved road safety by widening pavement width to current standards (9 metre width)
  • increased high-productivity vehicle accessibility to key freight routes in the higher mass limit network from Port Alma
  • improved reliability and efficiency of HAZMAT Class 1 explosive freight and ammonium nitrate movements between Port Alma and Bajool Explosives Plant, Galilee Basin and Bowen Basin Western Mineral Province
  • reduced whole-of-life asset management costs by strengthening and widening pavements to reduce accelerated road wear and damage by heavy vehicles

Funding

The Australian Government has committed up to $11.6 million towards this $14.5 million project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in April 2020 and was completed in August 2023.
