Project description

The Great Northern Highway is the only sealed road between the Port of Broome and the Port of Wydham on the National Land Transport Network linking Perth with Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The project will involve road reconstruction, realignment and installation of passing lanes along priority sections of the Highway between Ord and Turkey Creek.

Benefits

The project will provide the following benefits to the northern cattle supply chain:

  • improved road safety, through installation of passing lanes and strengthening of existing pavements
  • improved freight capacity and connectivity, through road realignment and upgrading as required
  • increased flood immunity, through the construction of a new two-lane bridge over Frog Hollow

Funding

The Australian Government has committed up to $12.5 million towards this $15.6 million project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in mid 2019 and was completed in late 2019. The improved section is now open to traffic.
