Project description
The Tablelands Highway is a major highway in the Northern Territory essential to the transportation of cattle, connecting the Barkly and Carpentaria highways.
This project involves upgrades to approximately 32km of the Tablelands Highway to improve safety and efficiency for heavy vehicles transporting livestock, as well as for other road users. The works will include upgrading to a two-lane sealed standard, pavement strengthening and widening and flood immunity improvements.
Benefits
The project will upgrade and improve the Tablelands Highway to enhance productivity, safety and northern development across the Barkly Tablelands region. Benefits from the project will include:
- improved road safety, through providing additional safe passing opportunities and widening of pavements, seal and culverts resulting in a reduction in vehicle roll over and runoff type crashes
- improved freight capacity, efficiency and reliability, through a reduction in the duration and frequency of wet season road closures and weight and/or vehicle type restrictions
- improved connectivity for local communities, particularly during the wet season, which rely on this road for supplies
Funding
The Australian Government committed $20 million towards this $25 million project.
Timetable
Construction commenced in late 2018 and was completed in mid 2020.
