Project description

Upgrade of the Midland Highway around the township of Perth, including a new dual carriageway starting west of the South Esk River Bridge to the north of Perth, linking to the existing Perth to Breadalbane duplication (at the Breadalbane roundabout); upgrade of the western connection to a full interchange with inclusion of on and off ramps at the northern connection; new roundabout at the southern entrance to Perth, near the existing Midland Highway and Eskleigh Road; new underpass for the existing rail line south of Illawarra Main Road; and new grade separated interchange at the tie-in of the new dual carriageway (at the northern end of Perth) for access to Perth.

Benefits

The duplication of the highway will improve safety and enhance transport efficiency between the southern and western regions of the State and will ensure that this section of the highway that carries higher volumes of traffic will be safe and reliable into the future.

Funding

The estimated cost of the project is $92.3 million. The Australian Government is contributing $83.1 million and the Tasmanian Government $9.2 million.

Timetable

Construction commenced in September 2018 and was completed in June 2020.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
