Project description

The Orange Creek and Deep Well stations and Mpwelarra Aboriginal Land Trust communities have 5 locations where fencing has required installation of gates across the public road. The gates were installed over 40 years ago across the road, limiting traffic to one lane through each gate. Due to increased traffic numbers in recent years with the development of the railway, mining, cattle and tourism, the gates are left permanently open after numerous incidents of vehicles crashing into the gates. This road section has been the subject of numerous near misses, accidents and complaints due to dust and poor visibility. The road has high usage from aboriginal communities, pastoralists, mining exploration, railway management, and expanding 4WD tourism. A significant volume of traffic is road trains for cattle haulage.

Replace five gates with grids and reform the road for 2 way traffic.
