Brisbane Metro comprises a high-frequency metro network across 21km of existing busway that links Eight Mile Plains, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, and the University of Queensland Lakes to the Brisbane CBD. The alignment features two new high-capacity, high-frequency metro lines: Metro 1 - Eight Mile Plains station to Roma Street station Metro 2 - Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital station to University of Queensland Lakes station.

The Australian Government committed $351.5 million towards the project.
Main construction works for the project began in early 2020 and construction is expected to be complete late 2025.
