Project description

The project will investigate options to provide faster passenger rail services from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. The project will be undertaken in two parts. The first part will develop a detailed business case for the Kuraby to Beenleigh Rail Capacity Improvement Project. The second part will develop a corridor strategy that will identify existing constraints and determine future demand and operational requirements. The corridor strategy will include a planning and investment program that will identify potential projects, cost and staging options, including an extension from Varsity Lakes to the Gold Coast Airport.

Benefits

The project will determine the economic, environmental and social costs and benefits of improved passenger rail services from Brisbane to the Gold Coast. The project will identify potential projects and will help guide future investment decisions along the corridor. The project will consider population growth, travel patterns, private sector financing opportunities and access to jobs, services and affordable housing.

Funding

The estimated cost of the project is $22 million. The Australian Government is contributing $8 million (capped) and the Queensland Government $14 million (in-kind contribution).

Timetable

The project commenced on 10 February 2020 and was completed in early 2023.
