Project description

The project will deliver upgrades on the Cooktown to Weipa corridor, including the Peninsula Developmental Road and surrounding roads, on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.

Two projects are currently approved on the corridor to progressively seal the Peninsula Developmental Road and its connecting Community Access Roads.

Benefits

The Cooktown to Weipa corridor is a key intra-regional link that connects a number of remote communities to essential services and employment opportunities. It is achieving positive outcomes and supporting the national commitment to Closing the Gap on Indigenous Disadvantage and improving the quality of life for Indigenous communities.

The corridor also supports numerous industries and will improve access for the cattle, mining, tourism and agricultural interests located along the corridor.

Funding

The Australian Government will contribute up to 80 per cent, capped at $258,500,000.

Timetable

The first project on this corridor commenced construction in July 2020 and works are expected to end by mid-2024. Planning on the corridor is continuing in consultation with the Queensland Government.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
