Project description

The intersection of Montague Road and Victoria Street at West End, is identified as a location for a future upgrade to improve safety and access. The project will replace the existing priority-controlled intersection with “Give Way signage on Victoria Street (west) and line marking” with traffic signals including pedestrian facilities. Montague Road is classified as a District Road and a primary cycle route in the 2014 Brisbane City Council road hierarchy carrying approximately 12,000 vehicles per day. It connects West End (via multiple river crossings) with the Brisbane CBD and northern suburbs such as Milton. In the vicinity of this intersection, it is one lane in each direction with City Glider bus stop, on-street parking and bicycle awareness zones on both sides of the road as well as an ALDI supermarket located on the north-west corner. Victoria Street is classified as a Local Road and a local cycle route in the 2014 Brisbane City Council road hierarchy. It is configured as a two-way two-lane roadway which carries approximately 3,000 vehicles per day. Currently traffic movements are constrained with right vehicles turning from Montague Road into Victoria Street (west) to access residential apartment blocks and the ALDI supermarket. This causes traffic delays which results in motorists taking unnecessary risks by weaving around. In addition, there is also approximately 2,000 pedestrian movements per day through the intersection accessing the CityGlider bus stops, ALDI supermarket and residential blocks with no formal crossing facilities at this location. There have been five accidents recorded between 2013 and 2018.

The project involves: • installing traffic signals at the intersection of Montague Road and Victoria Street with signalised pedestrian crossings • upgrade pedestrian facilities through footpath improvements and kerb ramps • Provide a dedicated southbound right turn lane from Montague Road into Victoria Street (west) • provide indented bus bays on Montague Road • remove the northbound right-turn from Montague Road into Victoria Street (east)

Total cost of proposed project is $7,206,317
