Project description

The stretch of road forms part of the primary access from the wharf to the Thursday Island township. The historical road construction is unable to manage the road loading resulting from the increasing delivery of freight to the island and is subsequently deteriorating. The potholes are causing trafficability issues to wharf plant and vehicles, causing vehicular damage and/ or loss of freight.

It is proposed to reconstruct the road with a concrete running surface. The existing roadway will be excavated down to subgrade, sub-base and base material of appropriate Californian Bearing Ratio (CBR) shall be imported and compacted. A concrete road running surface shall then be poured and allowed to cure. Traffic shall be diverted down Jetty Street to maintain the functionality of the wharf during construction. Appropriate public notification to relevant businesses shall be undertaken to minimise disruption. Project is in final scoping stages and will be completed during September 2020. Construction is underway and will be completed in September 2020.
