Project description

This project replaced the existing culvert with a single lane culvert system to address existing structural defects.

The works included:

Demolition and removal of the existing culvert/floodway
Construction of a single lane culvert system
Line-marking and signage
Erosion control and landscaping

Benefits

This project delivered the following benefits:

Improved flood immunity
Increased heavy vehicle access
Reduced travel times for freight and passenger vehicles

Funding

The Australian Government committed $264,000 million to the project under the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.

Timetable

Construction commenced in late 2020 and was completed in mid 2022.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
