Project description

This project involves scoping and investigation works for upgrades on the NT section of the Tanami Road, including design, resource and geotechnical investigations, clearances and other preparatory works for future projects.
The scoping and investigation works will inform the delivery of future projects on the NT section of the Tanami Road.

This project will inform the delivery of future projects on the NT section of the Tanami Road, providing preparation and an evidence base for the following benefits:

Improved accessibility and social equity
Improved road safety

Funding

The Australian Government will contribute $3.3 million towards this $4.1 million project.

Timetable

Scoping and investigation activities started in January 2021 and are expected to be completed by mid 2025.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
