Project description

The Tasmanian Freight Rail Revitalisation - Tranche 3 - Rail Renewal - Off Network project undertook key works where required to the Melba, Derwent Valley and Fingal Rail Lines including:

  • track works upgrades with the replacement of rail, sleepers and ballast including formation renewal work and trackside drainage;
  • earthworks strengthening and reconstructions;
  • upgrades to priority bridges and major culverts that have a minimum remaining service life of less than five years;
  • undertake coastal erosion and landslips remediation work in priority areas including installation of monitoring equipment;
  • upgrade of priority level crossings; and
  • construction and modification works within terminals and yards.

Benefits

The Project reduced the operational costs of freight movements, provided additional rail capacity, improved reliability and reduced transit times.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $4.48 million towards this project.

Timetable

Construction commenced in June 2021 and completed in June 2024.
