Project description

This project will upgrade Sunnyside Platform Road, north of Tenterfield. This includes the widening of about 2 kilometres of the road, remediation of failed pavement, upgrade of intersections at each end of the road, construction of a sealed school bus stop area, providing a pavement overlay, drainage, and providing a new seal and linemarking.

This road saves 9.5 kilometres in travel for northbound vehicles, but needs to be upgraded to be used safely by B-double freight vehicles.

Benefits

The project will upgrade Sunnyside Platform Road to required standards, improving freight efficiency and safety for all road users. It will also reduce transport operating costs.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $1.5 million towards this project, under the Investment Roads initiative. The remaining funding will be contributed by the Tenterfield Shire Council.

Timetable

The project commenced in early 2022 and was completed early 2023.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
