Project description

The Western Sydney Freight Line and Intermodal Terminal business case is investigating the need and strategic options for a dedicated rail connection from Port Botany to Western Sydney, to address expected future capacity constraints across Greater Sydney.

The project is being led by the New South Wales Government and is being developed under the New South Wales Government Infrastructure Investor Assessment Framework (IIAF), which sets out three initial phases of project assessment and development:

1. Needs Confirmation

2. Needs Analysis

3. Investment Decision

The Western Sydney Freight Line and Intermodal Terminal project is currently in the Needs Analysis phase.

Benefits

A dedicated freight line between Port Botany and Western Sydney would provide the opportunity to address future capacity constraints, more efficiently move freight from across New South Wales, improve access to international markets, and reduce congestion and reliance on road freight.

The project would also provide the opportunity to reduce congestion on the passenger network, and provide more reliable transit times for commuters by reducing the number of freight trains which currently travel within the Greater Sydney passenger network.

Funding

The Australian Government has committed $5 million to the Western Sydney Freight Line and Intermodal Terminal project, with the New South Wales Government also committing $5 million.

Timetable

The Australian Government is continuing to work with the New South Wales Government to progress business case activities.
