Project description

Alongside two other packages of works, the project will progressively strengthen and widen the Capricorn Highway, to improve the route’s useability and safety for heavy vehicles, thereby supporting local industry and regional economic growth.
The Capricorn Highway is a significant part of Queensland’s freight network, as it is an important resource for agriculture, tourism, and community links across Central Western and Coastal Queensland. Sections of the highway are currently of a narrow single seal, posing safety and productivity concerns. Therefore, increasing the level of service along the highway will improve overall safety and increased freight productivity and efficiency.

Funding

Total funding of $19.57 million (Australian Government Contribution $15,656,000, Queensland Government contribution $3.91 million).

Timetable

The project is expected to commence construction in late 2026 and be completed in mid 2028.

The Gardens Road (Alice Springs Rural Road) - 059887-15NT-RTR

The Gardens Road services the pastoral, tourism, mining and indigenous community industries. The nearby Alice Springs to Darwin road rail crossing is currently being upgraded to 2 lane 7m wide seal, finishing at the existing narrow non-standard, single lane grid. The upgrade of the grid and drainage is a safety issue.It is proposed to raise the grid to allow drainage to occur, widen the grid to standard 9.6 metre width, raise the road approaches and build fence on both sides of the grid for traffic safety.
