Project description

The Western Interstate Freight Terminal will require a new rail connection, the Outer Metropolitan Ring (OMR) rail to ensure it is connected to the existing freight rail network and Inland Rail.

The project involves the delivery of the southern portion of the OMR rail connection and will provide a key link from the existing national freight network near Werribee into the Western Interstate Freight Terminal. The OMR Rail South connection will enable efficient movement of east-west (Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth) freight volumes and will also enable (single-stacked) freight trains to access the terminal at Truganina.

The OMR Rail South connection will be aligned with the delivery of the Western Interstate Freight Terminal. This investment by the Commonwealth towards the project is contingent on a funding contribution from the Victorian Government.

The Victorian Government’s long term freight strategy highlights the need for two new intermodal terminals which will be delivered in Melbourne – one in Beveridge in Melbourne’s north (delivered in time for Inland Rail services) and one in Truganina in Melbourne’s west.

Benefits

  • Improved efficiency and network reliability
  • Improved freight productivity

  • Reduced congestion and improved travel times

Funding

This investment by the Commonwealth towards the project is contingent on a funding contribution from the Victorian Government.

Timetable

TBC (delivery expected to align with the completion of the Western Interstate Freight Terminal).
